Base oil is the primary building block of virtually all finished lubricants — engine oils, industrial oils, greases, hydraulic fluids, and metalworking fluids all start with a base oil, into which additive packages are blended to achieve the final product's performance characteristics. Refined from crude oil (or, for synthetic types, manufactured through chemical synthesis), base oil typically makes up 70–99% of a finished lubricant by volume, making its quality the single biggest factor in how that lubricant ultimately performs.
Base Oil Classification
Base oils are classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API 1509, Annex E) into five groups, based on three defining properties: sulfur content, saturates content, and viscosity index (VI). This classification system is the global reference point used by refiners, blenders, and buyers to specify and compare base oil quality.
Applications
Base oils are widely used across a range of automotive and industrial applications, including:
- Engine oils — automotive, marine, and industrial engine lubrication
- Industrial lubricants — hydraulic fluids, gear oils, compressor oils, turbine oils
- Greases — as the fluid carrier for thickener and additive systems
- Metalworking fluids — cutting, forming, and rolling oil formulations
- Process oils — rubber, textile, and other industrial processing applications
